The Artist and the Art

London born, British American artist Paul Seftel creates his own paints with stone and metal minerals. These organic abstract paintings fuse elemental forces of nature, earth changes and self realization together with light, color and texture.

Settling in California a few years ago, Paul Seftel's studio is currently in a huge old cannery building facing Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row. The constant traveller, Paul has lived all across the US for the last 25 years and is originally from London

Capturing the deepest parts of the ocean and space, Paul's work with light, color and texture fuse emotion with observation of earth changes, epiphanies as forces of nature and meditative self realization into painting. Exploring marks of nature made on the map of the world, from the lightning strike to ocean coral, we see the underlying structures of how the world has been created. Light, color and texture are the cloak. Consciousness is wrapped into these paintings, as if the transformational elements around us and within us connect human self realization with the topography and texture of our landscape and world.

The work filters romantic and mystical influences present in the world of nature and art history into a contemporary abstract expressionism, where the artist is the medium, and each work is a shamanic act - produced as part of a focus and observation of the light of the moment, the here and now. Light, color and the texture of earth pigments become the cloak of consciousness in theses fields of color. Paintings created not merely as objects, but as metaphysical states where a transformative art form has manifested as an artifact of  time.  Layer upon layer are added and subtracted over a period of weeks and months, and watching the cycles of creation and destruction, a lasting form is left behind. The paintings are a journey and map of experience - happy accidents created slowly and surely in collaboration with art and nature.

Using abstract expressionist and action painting techniques, there's gravity, alchemy and magic at work in the textural surface of the canvas. Evoking memories of dreams, emotions and spiritual experience, the work explores and reflects our emotions connected to our changing landscape. Earth changes, mineral mining, desert, ocean and space exploration and self realization, are all conveyed in these topographic colorfields and elemental landscapes. The language of color and texture is seen close up and at a great distance, and perhaps even something becomes awakened within us, offering a glimpse of our place in the universe.

Paul was an artist in NYC for nearly a decade, painting, exhibiting and running studios and project spaces in Brooklyn and Manhattan. He spent earlier years living in Colorado, New Mexico and Los Angeles, after leaving school in London and University in Edinburgh.

Along the way Seftel has created many commissioned custom large scale interior spaces, written a couple of books, and worked with film / video art and production. His original works are in private collections, from world renowned musicians, composers, fashion people, moguls, lawyers, tech entrepreneurs and other wonderfully inspired wizards and matriarchs of discernment.
