B52s and the Political Mirage

24 x 36" original canceled 7 cent stamps from 1958 and 1960 and metal pigments on canvas. 2010

Red and Blue B52 bombers converge and collide as monumental iron towers of Sevens, emerge burning through the mirage. These were all sent and gathered back together. Warhol made a screen print of this stamp.

2000 cancelled 1939 6 cent stamps, this painting captures the 'sixth sense' of consciousness ( 6 cents), the repetition of time in an ocean of change. Each stamp has had a 75 year journey, having been sent, cancelled, removed and collected, to be gathered together again and become part of this American heritage painting.

It struck me that that nameless chief on the 14-cent stamp ought to be someone. There have been so many great and inspiring leaders within Native American history. And as Geronimo had so long been interred in federal captivity I thought it an interesting way to perhaps set that spirit free. So I created a piece with Geronimo emerging from the 14-cent stamp.
